After a rash of air traffic controllers fell asleep on the job, the Federal Aviation Administration has approved a measure that would require airport towers to be staffed with at least two air traffic controllers during the night shift. The move comes after a controller at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport failed to respond to a medical flight that was trying to land. The controller took sixteen minutes to respond to the call. “We absolutely cannot and will not tolerate sleeping on the job,” said FAA administrator J. Randolph Babbitt. Thankfully, the measure goes into effect immediately.
