For six months, the Fire Department in Queens just kind of leisurely made its way over to emergencies that weren’t fires and weren’t life threatening, instead of speeding there with sirens blaring, scaring the crap out of neighborhood cats. Apparently, the FDNY gets into a lot of traffic accidents, and by taking a mellower approach to some calls, they got into 32 percent fewer of them. The system is now being expanded to Staten Island and Brooklyn. [NYDN]
