Senator John Ensign of Nevada announced he’ll be resigning before the end of his term, amid an ethics investigation related to an affair Ensign had been having with the wife of his (presumably former) BFF and top aide Doug Hampton. Ensign had already announced he wouldn’t be running for reelection, after getting in a heap of trouble with the Senate Ethics Committee and the FBI.
“It is with tremendous sadness that I officially hand over the Senate seat that I have held for eleven years,” said Ensign, in a statement released on Thursday. “The turbulence of these last few years is greatly surpassed by the incredible privilege that I feel to have been entrusted to serve the people of Nevada.” The resignation will take place May 3 and Nevada governor Brian Sandoval will appoint a Republican senator to fill out the rest of the term.
