On Tuesday, taxi driver Wasim Khalid Cheema returned to New York from Kansas City, Missouri, to face charges of defrauding more than 2,500 passengers out of around $12,000 on cab fares. Cheema allegedly did the scamming by setting his meter at a suburban taxi rate — which is double the regular city rate. The Taxi and Limousine Commission’s investigation into Cheema was part of a wider look into rate practices, which eventually led to an additional 45 cabdrivers pleading guilty to the same behavior.
