The 35-year-old has kept the information close up until now, going about her job at the State Department, but close friends and colleagues (including, surely, Hillary Clinton) were in the know. On Wednesday, Abedin left for North Africa with the Secretary of State, amid reports—now cast in a totally different light—that she plans to stay with Weiner.
Meanwhile, the news could cost Weiner some of his crucial support among liberal Democrats: Consider this tweet from Joan Walsh, previously one of the most vocal Weiner defenders. “The pregnancy changes everything. Weiner could depict fighting as political courage, but dragging a pregnant wife deeper in this muck?” More and more Democrats are calling on Weiner to step down; surely this news will accelerate the pile-on.
