Arizona senator John McCain took time out on Saturday to announce his belief that illegal immigrants are to blame for the wildfires that have recently ravaged parts of Arizona, such as the Wallow fire, now the largest conflagration in Arizona history. Citing “substantial evidence,” McCain said, “Some of these fires are caused by people who have crossed our border illegally. They have set fires because they signal others, they have set fires to keep warm, and they have set fires in order to divert law enforcement agents and agencies from them.” On Sunday, however, Tom Berglund, a rep for the U.S. Forest Service, said there’s “no evidence that illegal immigrants caused the Wallow fire,” although Berglund added that the cause of the Wallow fire has been determined to be human.
