It appears that James “Whitey” Bulger does not have dementia. His neighbors in California were told that Bulger, who was apprehended earlier this week on charges that he killed nineteen people during his time as a mob boss, was going a little senile in his old age. But in a hearing in Boston yesterday, Bulger appeared entirely lucid, especially when cracking a joke. When the judge asked if he could afford a lawyer, Bulger said, “Well, I could if you’d give me my money back.” See, that’s genuinely funny. Unless Bulger killed your relative. Then it’s infuriating.
