The long-gestating 9/11 memorial is set to open in September, but officials are still searching for another $3 million to construct significant portions of the project, such as a security fence and a visitor check-in area, according to Port Authority executive director Chris Ward. That said, Ward is adamant that it’s not the job of the Port Authority, which has already funded $4 million of the $16 million piece of the future World Trade Center site, to come up with the money for the memorial. At a meeting for the World Trade Center Redevelopment Committee, Ward announced:
“I’m going down to City Hall today to make it clear that somebody else is going to have to find the $3 million.”
We, too, are going to march down to City Hall today and demand someone find us a spare $3 million. It’s not our job to pay our own bills.
