Back in May, President Obama, during a speech about the Middle East peace process, said that Israel and Palestine should work toward a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders and mutually agreed-upon land swaps. People with a political incentive to do so decided to pretend that this was some kind of new and outrageous anti-Israel proposal, even though it had been the basis for peace talks for over a decade. These people included:
Tim Pawlenty: “President Obama’s insistence on a return to the 1967 borders is a mistaken and very dangerous demand.”
Michele Bachmann: “Obama’s call for 1967 borders will cause chaos, division & more aggression in Middle East & put Israel at further risk”
Mitt Romney: “President Obama has thrown Israel under the bus. He has disrespected Israel and undermined its ability to negotiate peace.”
Sarah Palin: “President Obama has in essence boxed Israel in without regard for the facts on the ground and without appreciating the fact that Israel looks across the negotiating table and sees the terrorist organization Hamas in alliance with Fatah.”
We can only imagine the verbal lashing those same people are about to give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
