A Texas jury deliberated for more than three hours today before finding Warren Jeffs, the so-called prophet of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, guilty of two counts of sexual assault for entering into “spiritual marriages” with two teenagers, one of whom had his child at the age of 15. He faces life in prison.
The prosecution rested today after playing audio of Jeffs allegedly having sex with a 12-year-old girl while telling her to feel “the spirit of God.” Jeffs, who served as his own attorney, spent most of his 25-minute closing argument staring silently and at one point mumbled, “I am at peace.”
