The repeal of the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ rule for gays in the military will be lifted once and for all at midnight, allowing Americans of any sexual orientation to serve openly in the armed services. “No one should be left with the impression that we are unprepared. We are prepared for repeal,” said Pentagon press secretary George Little today, echoing an official Army memo explaining that all associated personnel have “discussed, trained and prepared for this day.” President Obama signed the legislation into law in December, and in July, he selected September 20 as the end date for the Clinton-era policy, which saw more than 13,000 homosexuals expelled from service. According to today’s announcement signed by senior army staff, “From this day forward, gay and lesbian Soldiers may serve in our Army with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
