John McCain, at one time David Letterman’s nemesis, joined the funny man on Thursday night on Late Show with David Letterman to review the narrowing Republican presidential candidate field. Both men agreed that Mitt Romney would be the nominee. The senator said, “I think he deserves it.”
Letterman gave McCain several opportunities to knock the other candidates and their many gaffes, but McCain, perhaps still remembering well his own battles under the campaign-trail spotlight, pointed to the difficulty of avoiding a error. “When you’re there in the arena, it’s a very-high pressure situation,” he said. Letterman replied, “I understand what you’re saying — and thank God for the selection process — it just seems like maybe we ought to be starting with a higher bin.”
