The New York Times has a brief charticle comparing the “State of” speeches from the three leading mayoral candidates and the current mayor. Other than scandal-ridden John Liu’s line about Jeremy Lin (“The guy gets great headlines in The New York Post. I got to get some tips from him!”), our favorite part was the breakdown of what tune each picked for the speech’s exit music.
El Bloombito, naturally, played “New York, New York” en español (Nueva York being one of the Spanish phrases he’s mastered best). City council speaker Christine Quinn played Bon Jovi’s “I Love This Town,” a safe and boring bet. Liu played the disco number “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now,” which could be interpreted either as wishful thinking, or a nod to Liu’s philosophy when it comes to campaign finance laws. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer selected David Bowie’s “Heroes”; presumably, the “just for one day” he’s got in mind would occur in November 2013.
