70-Foot Jeff Koons Train Replica May Hang Above the High Line

The High Line: now, maybe, with more Jeff Koons

Pop artist Jeff Koons displayed his massive, vibrant sculptures on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2008, and now Friends of the High Line is considering funding a 70-foot sculpture of a 1943 train to hang above the park along Manhattan’s West Side Highway. The project is called Train and has not yet been built. The full-size replica of the Baldwin 2900 steam locomotive will cost about $25 million to construct and install.

We’ve had a crush on the Train for a while now,” Robert Hammond, co-founder of Friends of the High Line, told the Times. “To me, it looks very industrial and sculptural. The craftsmanship that went into these industrial engines is quite beautiful.”
