Multiple sources reported late Wednesday that India tested a new nuclear-capable missile that “would give it, for the first time, the capability of striking the major Chinese cities of Beijing and Shanghai.” Reuters reports that the launch of the Agni IV missile was “flagged well in advance” and wasn’t met with the kind of disapproval in the West that North Korean tests attract. China, however, was displeased. The missile was fired just after 8 a.m. local time from Wheeler Island off of India’s east coast.

[The launch] has met all the mission objectives,” S.P.Dash, director of the test range, told Reuters. “It hit the target with very good accuracy.”

MSNBC described the weapon as capable of “reaching deep inside China and Europe,” which sounds awfully invasive.
