The Supreme Court threw out an appeal today from an Upper West Side couple who claimed that rent-stabilization laws violate their constitutional rights. James and Jeanne Harmon own a brownstone in which three of the six rental units go for about $1,000 a month, while market value is more than double that. “The Constitution gives us the right to decide who will live in our own home and under what terms,” Harmon said today before the court disagreed and tossed the case, which had already been rejected 3-0 by a federal appeals court. The current rules have been in place since 1969, and apply to about one million New York City apartments, none of which can be easily found, like unicorns.
