Riding an elevator is not complicated. You get in, you push your button, you turn toward the door, and you stare straight ahead (or at a TV, if you’re lucky enough to have one) until it’s time to get off. But apparently there are people who can’t handle these very simple guidelines. Careerbuilder.com surveyed nearly 4,000 U.S. workers, asking them for their biggest elevator etiquette pet peeve. In first place, with 35 percent, was talking on a cell phone, which makes sense because half of all elevator cell phone conversations consist of “Hello? He … hello? Can you hear me? You there? I’m in an elevator.”
But we found it strange that 7 percent of respondents said the most annoying habit is “Facing away from the elevator door, instead of toward the door like everyone else.” Personally, we don’t think we’ve come across this before, possibly ever. Do people really do this? It seems absolutely psychotic.
