With murder rates on the decline in our fair city for some time, the Daily News now reports that we’ve only had 414 homicides so far this year. That’s 18.5 percent less for 2012 than the year before. What’s more, the drop may keep the murder count below even suicide numbers, which, according to the city Health Department, is about 475 New Yorkers annually. Police commissioner Ray Kelly is of course “thankful” for the numbers (possibly the lowest in 50 years) even though “the population is as high as it’s ever been.” Like he did in November, Kelly still credits the city’s controversial “stop-and-frisk” policy.
