New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is engulfed in a number of scandals at the moment, but on Monday he told CNN that he can explain everything. Menendez says he sent his donor/friend, who happens to be under investigation, $58,500 last month to cover the cost of two flights on a private jet because, “I was in a big travel schedule in 2010 as the chair of the (Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee), plus my own campaign getting ready for a re-election cycle and in the process of all of that, it unfortunately fell through the cracks.” Sure, we all forget to pay a $60,000 bill from time to time, but what about those allegations that he consorted with underage prostitutes during trips to the Dominican Republic? “The bottom line is all those smears are absolutely false,” he said.
For what it’s worth, on Monday Univision aired an interview with a young woman who was accused of being a prostitute involved with Menendez. She said she’s never heard of him or worked as a prostitute — though it’s possible Univision talked to the wrong woman. As the Miami Herald notes, this is either a major development in the case, or the network “spoke to some poor private country girl and asked her if she was a whore. And then it put it on television.”
