A White House official says President Obama will nominate Thomas Perez, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, to be his next labor secretary. Perez is a first-generation Dominican American, which might placate those who have complained about the lack of diversity in Obama’s cabinet. However, there’s still so much to fight about! Perez’s office handled controversial voting rights and discrimination cases, and a report last week found that there’s “deep ideological polarization” between liberals and conservatives in the Justice Department’s voting rights section. Obama is expected to announce the nomination on Monday, but Senator Chuck Grassley is already complaining about Perez.
