NYPD Traffic Unit Removes Presumption of Innocence From Name

As part of the NYPD’s new push to more seriously investigate traffic crashes, the department has taken the word “accident” out of the name of the unit that investigates them. Now they’re “collisions,” which is more accurate. “In the past, the term ‘accident’ has sometimes given the inaccurate impression or connotation that there is no fault or liability associated with a specific event,” Commissioner Ray Kelly wrote in a letter to City Council. So say hello to the newly re-branded Collision Investigation Squad.
