Citi Bikes Have a Weight Limit … Sort Of

The Post has discovered (by reading the Citi Bike contract) that New York’s new bike-share program prohibits people who weigh more than 260 pounds from signing up. Supposedly the bikes can’t hold that much weight, but several bike shop owners said they doubt that’s true. Banning overweight people from getting some exercise on a sufficiently sturdy bike doesn’t make much sense, but the issue may be moot. Department of Transportation policy director Jon Orcutt says the line was added for legal reasons, and the city doesn’t intend to strictly enforce the weight limit. Nevertheless, the Post is incensed on behalf of heftier New Yorkers … or just really wanted to use the headline “Apple Snubs Chubs.”
