Brooke Astor’s Son Is Finally Going to Prison

89-year-old Anthony Marshall, who was convicted in 2009 of looting his late mother’s $185 million fortune while allowing the legendary philanthropist (who suffered from dementia near the end of her life) to live in squalid conditions, appeared at the Manhattan Supreme Court Friday afternoon to begin his one-to-three-year prison term. Though Marshall’s surrender marks the end of years of ugly legal wrangling and appeals, Marshall, who is said to be suffering from dementia himself, declined to give a statement. According to the New York Post’s account, as court officers wheeled him out of the room with his oxygen tank and a bag of medication, his wife Charlene Marshall shouted, “My heart has been ripped out of my body!” while clutching her husband’s hand.
