The much-loved, oft-profiled chess program at Intermediate School 318 accounts for a tiny fraction of the $130 million in childcare and after-school programs currently slated to be cut from the city’s budget. The city kicks in $20,000 for the program, which raises the other $40,000 of its annual budget on its own. But it’s the highest-profile potential closure, thanks to last year’s documentary about the team, Brooklyn Castle. The rest of the programs threatened by the cut don’t even have movies made about them.
