Geoffrey Miller, the visiting NYU instructor whose fat-shaming tweet about obese PhD candidates lacking “the willpower to do a dissertation,” won’t lose his position at NYU, The Observer learned on Monday. But given the tentative tone of a statement from University of New Mexico, where he’s on staff, the professor’s future there sounds less certain. Especially in light of his claim to UNM’s department chair that the tweet was “part of a research project.” The university, which said it was “investigating every aspect of this incident,” wrote that “we are looking into the validity of this assertion, and will take appropriate measures.” Meanwhile, Miller’s Twitter stream has been locked, just a day too late.
