The tree branches that have been falling on New York of late gave way to a much bigger and deadlier arboreal accident on Sunday when a whole tree fell over on a pregnant woman, killing her. The woman, 30-year-old Yingyi Li, was sitting on a bench in Kissena Park in Queens, when the oak tree fell on her from behind, hitting her in the head, the New York Daily News reports. Another woman sitting near her had a minor injury but refused treatment. It’s still unclear exactly why the tree fell over, as the weather wasn’t particularly windy. NYC Parks Advocates president Geoffrey Croft told CBS New York it was the twelfth injury from falling branches in the last eight weeks, thanks to a lack of maintenance.
