McCain Gets Bored With Syria Talk, Plays iPhone Poker During Hearing

WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 3: Senator John McCain plays poker on his IPhone during a U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations hearing where Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey testify concerning the use of force in Syria, on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Anyone who’s watched more than 30 seconds of C-SPAN knows that Congress can be unbelievably boring, but you’d think a hearing on whether we should bomb another country would hold lawmakers’ interest – particularly when that country is Syria and the senator in question has been clamoring for U.S. involvment in its civil war. Yet, during Tuesday’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Washington Post photographer Melina Mara managed to get a shot of John McCain “passing the time by playing poker on his iPhone.”

Since McCain has turned over a new, less crotchy leaf, he responded by tweeting, “Scandal! Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing - worst of all I lost!” The old McCain would have been caught drafting an angry statement about how the Obama administration isn’t keeping Congress informed on Syria, then asked Mara why the hell she thinks she’s allowed to photograph senators’ iPhones
