Chris Christie’s last-minute attempt to delay marriage equality in New Jersey failed today. The state’s highest court ruled that New Jersey must start granting marriage licenses to gay couples starting Monday, making it the fourteenth state to recognize same-sex weddings. “The state has advanced a number of arguments, but none of them overcome this reality: Same-sex couples who cannot marry are not treated equally under the law today,” the court ruled. “The harm to them is real, not abstract or speculative.” Arguments are still set for January in a state Supreme Court appeal, so the window could be closed. In the meantime, Senator-Elect Cory Booker is ready to get started: He’ll begin conducting weddings at Newark City Hall at 12:01 a.m. on Monday.
