Rachael Maddow could not conceal her glee Monday at catching Rand Paul apparently plagiarizing from Wikipedia in a speech stumping for Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli. Because that apparent plagiarism wasn’t from any old Wikipedia article, it was from the article about the 1997 Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman joint Gattaca. Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski points out that Wikipedia’s revision history shows it wasn’t updated after the speech, suggesting Paul really did lift the lines. Rand Paul, who is a doctor, spoke to supporters at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University about the dangers of a society dominated by eugenics (because abortion). For what it’s worth, his reading of lines such as “in the not-too-distant future, eugenics is common and DNA plays a primary role in determining your social class,” really brings new life to that informational summary of the movie.
