Last night, the Port Authority and the Durst Organization tested out the hundreds of red, white, and blue LED lights contained in the 408-foot spire atop the Freedom Tower. The display was well timed: On Friday, the architects who designed One World Trade Center met with Chicago’s Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, which is in the process of deciding if the structure should be considered the tallest in the United States. (There’s some debate over whether the spire should be counted toward the Freedom Tower’s final height, which is 1,776 feet on paper.) Record breaking or not, the glow from the spire can be seen from 50 miles away, so it’s good that Banksy got out of town.
