As expected, the mayor-elect will announce today that former NYPD chief Bill Bratton, who led the department in the mid-nineties, will return to his old post, replacing Ray Kelly for the second time. “He wants New York again,” a close friend of Bratton’s told New York Magazine in 2009. “It’s unfinished business for him.” Bratton himself said “that’s not so far-fetched at all. If you were a candidate in the city running for mayor, and you’ve got one of the biggest names in American policing and somebody who had basically begun the process of making New York safe? They’ll all be knocking on my door.”
