America’s Mayor “played a little thought game” on Morning Joe today, telling the world that, regardless of his own political loyalties, Chris Christie handled yesterday’s George Washington Bridge press conference beautifully. “This was very, very refreshing,” said Rudy Giuliani of the New Jersey governor’s explanation. “We’ve had a couple of years in Washington with a lot of situations like that IRS thing and Benghazi. We have a president who … never takes accountability, never fires anybody.” Christie, he added, “acted like a chief executive.”
The effusive praise from Giuliani, even as some Republicans say otherwise, surely has nothing to do with the constant comparisons between the former NYC mayor’s style and Christie’s own, for better or worse. (“People who think hard about Chris Christie’s place in presidential politics always land on Rudy Giuliani, who Republicans thought they liked for a minute, and then got to know,” wrote Ben Smith this week.)
“Having run a very complicated administration — sometimes it’s impossible to believe it — but you really don’t know,” said Giuliani of the mess (“a stupid political prank that backfired”) yesterday. “Politically stupid things, political pranks that turn bad, all that other stuff [happens in] every administration.”
