Friends of Abe – the fellowship of Hollywood conservatives that includes Gary Sinise, Jon Voight, Kelsey Grammer and a lot of people who don’t want to be identified for fear of a backlash from liberal coworkers – has been recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity. The IRS has been looking into the group’s activities for three years, as such groups are not allowed to take part in partisan activity. The agency wouldn’t discuss specifics, but presumably they did not follow the strategy Ted Cruz, a former Friends of Abe speaker, described to Glenn Beck: “The advice I gave ‘Friends of Abe,’ I said listen, you guys should give the same answer to them you would give to any McCarthyist investigation which is, ‘Go jump in a lake.’”
