Thanks to Mayor De Blasio, there’s been a renewed focus on traffic safety in New York recently, but this isn’t the top pedestrian danger that sprung to mind. The New York Post reports that a detective was run over and dragged by an all-terrain vehicle on Sunday as NYPD officers attempted to stop a driver careening through the streets of Cypress Hills. The detective tried to grab the vehicle at around 3:30 p.m, and was hit so hard he was knocked out of his shoes. “He’s going to be all right,” said a law enforcement source who visited him in the hospital. “It looks like he has a broken arm and a broken leg, but his head’s OK.” The ATV was abandoned outside an auto-body shop on Hegeman Avenue, and police found suspect Christian Oliviere, 23, hiding inside a car on a raised lift in the garage. He’s been charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving.
