Following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the Ukrainian government has moved to evacuate 25,000 troops to the mainland, the New York Times reports, a plan that “effectively amounted to a surrender of Crimea, at least from a military standpoint.” Above, a Ukrainian officer, bags packed, leaves naval headquarters as masked men with huge guns look on.
Local militia, with the Russian military as backup, stormed the base in Sevastopol. The Associated Press has raw video:
“We had no order and no weapons,” said a Ukrainian soldier on why they did not fight back. “We met them empty-handed,” said another.
