A disgruntled group of die-hards calling themselves Knicks Fans 4 Life had been planning for weeks to stage a protest outside Madison Square Garden prior to Wednesday’s game against Indiana. But on Tuesday, the team made a splashy, potentially franchise-altering front-office move, hiring Phil Jackson as team president. The rally proceeded as scheduled, but what exactly were the 40 or 50 fans who braved the chilly, drizzly weather protesting? It depends on whom you ask.
Organizers said that their demands — changing the MSG media policy, more public appearances from widely loathed team owner James Dolan, and giving full control to Jackson — have already been met (for the time being, at least), and that the purpose of the rally was to support the team and to tell Dolan that they’ll be watching to make sure he keeps his word to let Jackson run the show. But other protestors seemed to just want to shout anti-Dolan slogans and display anti-Dolan signs. (For a time, those shouts competed with a drum line performing on the plaza in front of the arena.)
