Even amid the security panic at the new World Trade Center after a bored teenager and a bunch of BASE jumpers just walked right in, they can’t seem to keep the fence closed. Two more people strolled through the gate last week, the Star-Ledger reports, neither of whom were trying to prove a point or to pull a stunt. They didn’t even really mean to. It’s getting a bit absurd.
In one case, a 54-year-old man breezed past a guard who was talking to a truck driver making a delivery. Multitasking has not been considered a strength of the team so far. (The guy was given a trespassing ticket.) In a second incident, a construction worker on his way to a job interview at the site didn’t know where he was supposed to be going, so he followed a different truck through another open gate, like it was no big deal.
“A security breach is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” said the Port Authority’s chief security officer. “If our current security providers cannot meet the strict performance measures included in their contract, they will be replaced.” All applicants should feel free to walk right in.
