Along with captain Lee Jun-seok, chief engineer Park Gi-ho and shipmates Kang Won-sik and Kim Young-ho are now facing murder charges for “thinking about their own lives” and “not [exercising] their duty of aid and relief” when their boat, the Sewol, sank in April. (The ferry’s 11 other crew members have been charged with various lesser crimes.) Around 300 people, many of them high school students, were killed in the accident. If convicted, Lee, Park, Kang, and Kim could face the death penalty.
