Once again, the combination of warm weather and a weekend night resulted in a depressing amount of violence in New York City: Within 12 hours on Saturday night, at least 13 people were shot across all five of the boroughs. The New York Daily News reports that the earliest shooting happened around 7:20 p.m., when a 10-year-old boy and a 25-year-old man were wounded outside of a deli on Coney Island’s Mermaid Avenue. Later, 33-year-old Jason Bragg was shot to death in Cambria Heights, Queens, and a 28-year-old man was killed in Brownsville. (Two other people were injured in the same attack.) The other incidents took place in East New York, Bed-Stuy, Staten Island’s New Dorp, and the Bronx’s University Heights. A woman who was at a 120-person Harlem cookout during the shooting told the Daily News, “There were like twenty shots, they were just letting them go. I just ran, I even dropped my phone … I couldn’t even tell how many people were shooting. It was just scary.”
