Rare Twin Tornadoes Touch Down in Nebraska

One person was killed and 16 were injured when at least four tornadoes ripped through northeastern Nebraska on Monday. At times, two of the massive twisters touched down at the same time, as shown in this video taken by storm chasers. “Two powerful tornadoes on the ground at the same time is quite rare,” said Barbara Mayes, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Omaha. Pilger, a town with about 350 residents, was hit the hardest. Officials estimated that 50 to 75 percent of the town was seriously damaged or destroyed in the storm. “Pilger is gone,” said Sanford Goshorn, director of emergency management for Stanton County. “The tornado cut right through the center of town.” Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman has declared a state of emergency, and the National Guard has been deployed to help with rescue and clean-up efforts.
