A U.S. victory over Portugal yesterday would have qualified the Americans for the knockout round while eliminating Portugal’s hopes of advancing out of the group stage. Of course, that didn’t happen: A Silvestre Varela header tied the game at two late in stoppage time, shocking the U.S. and keeping Portugal’s World Cup dreams alive. To chronicle the day’s ups and downs for fans of both countries, Daily Intelligencer sent photographers to Pao on Spring Street (where Portugal fans watched the game) and to Lonestar Bar and Grill in Bay Ridge (the meeting place of the U.S. supporters group American Outlaws Brooklyn). Here’s a look at the scene at both spots.
