Derek Jeter played his last MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday night, or as CBS News tweeted, “Michael Jeter takes bow at his final All-Star game.” It seems like every brand’s social-media team is destined to make at least one mortifying gaffe, and CBS can take comfort in the fact that theirs wasn’t vaguely racist, and didn’t exploit one of the worst days in American history to sell canned pasta. It was even sort of understandable, since a tribute to the Yankees shortstop from Nike’s Jordan Brand was featured prominently during the broadcast. Still, “Michael Jeter” was trending worldwide on Tuesday night, along with #AthleteNameCombo. Everyone wants to give Jeter a proper send off, and Twitter can only express its love in dumb hashtags.
