Rebels Shoot Down Two Ukrainian Fighter Jets

Armed pro-Russian separatists block the way to the crash site of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, near the village of Grabove, in the region of Donetsk on July 20, 2014. The missile system used to shoot down a Malaysian airliner was handed to pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine by Moscow, the top US diplomat said Sunday. Outraged world leaders have demanded Russia's immediate cooperation in a prompt and independent probe into the shooting down on July 17 of flight MH17 with 298 people on board. There’s just no peace in the skies over rebel-controlled areas in southeastern Ukraine. Government and pro-Russia rebel forces, who finally agree on something, both reported that rebels shot down two Ukrainian fighter jets today, just about an hour’s drive from where Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 was hit with a Buk missile last week. Several pilots were evidently able to parachute out, though it remains unclear whether they have survived. Kiev accused Russia of furnishing more weapons to insurgents, who have taken to blowing up bridges and other infrastructure. According to a spokesman for Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, Ukrainian forces have recovered weapons with Russian markings and documentation upon retaking several cities.
