Somebody Purposely Left a Baby in a Subway Station

A woman abandoned her baby — or someone else’s baby — in the Columbus Circle subway station on Monday afternoon, apparently on purpose. According to witnesses, the woman, who looked to be in her 20s or 30s, rode a northbound 1 into the station, pushed the stroller containing the 7-month-old girl onto the platform, and departed on the same train. A female passerby noticed that the child was alone and waited with her for a while, thinking her caretaker would return, but she never did.

The infant, who was wearing a white and red shirt, black leggings, and a diaper when she was found, was eventually taken to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, where she was examined and said to be healthy, save for a minor rash and a bandage on her hand. She’s been placed in the custody of the city’s Administration for Children’s Services while the authorities work to identify her, as well as the person who left her behind.
