Montana’s senator-for-the-year John Walsh, who was appointed to Max Baucus’s seat in an attempt to keep it for the Democrats in November, has failed miserably. Walsh announced today that he’s leaving the race following a New York Times report that he plagiarized an unforgivable amount of his master’s thesis while at the Army War College. “I am ending my campaign so that I can focus on fulfilling the responsibility entrusted to me as your U.S. senator,” said Walsh, an Iraq veteran who had nearly pulled even with his Republican challenger before the scandal. At this point, he might as well have gone with, “I will not accept if nominated and will not serve if elected.”
