Anyone who’s seen how close those busloads of tourists get to other vehicles on the crowded streets of Times Square knows that driving one must be a very exact art — all the more reason not to do so while (allegedly) impaired.
Yesterday’s double-double-decker collision injured more than a dozen people when one sideswiped another and jumped the curb, sending a light post crashing down on pedestrians near the TKTS booth. Gray Line driver William Dalambert, of Irvington, New Jersey, has been charged with not being his best self at the time.
The Wall Street Journal reports:
Mr. Dalambert … passed a Breathalyzer test at the scene. But following a field sobriety test, he was taken to the 7th precinct stationhouse and placed under arrest around 8:30 p.m. … Results of urine and blood tests are pending, a law enforcement official said.
According to the New York DMV, a driving while ability impaired charge can apply to a blood alcohol content not quite at the .08 level required for a DWI, but higher than .05, “or other evidence of impairment,” including a single drug other than alcohol or a combination of the two.
All of the victims are involved are expected to be okay. “We are very, very fortunate there weren’t many more injuries,” said the FDNY. It wasn’t as bad as it looks.
