Forty-seven-year-old Pedro Rosales and 24-year-old Jessica Aguilar were arrested on Saturday after Rosales accidentally shot their 9-month-old daughter in the family’s East New York apartment.
The New York Times reports that the father’s (unregistered) Colt .45 handgun went off while he was cleaning it, striking the baby in the hip and exiting through her back. Aguilar, who, according to the New York Daily News, was out when the shooting occurred, told the cops that she arrived home to find Jessica “crying and wearing bloodied clothes.” The couple flagged down a police car, and the girl was taken to Woodhull Hospital and then to Bellevue for surgery.
Rosales, who has faced gun charges before, was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, and acting in a manner injurious to a child, and Aguilar was charged with reckless endangerment and acting in a manner injurious to a child. Remarkably, their daughter is expected to be fine.
