At the end of last week, Bill Bratton declared the NYPD work stoppage “over in the sense that the numbers are starting to go back up again.” “I anticipate by early next week that the numbers will return to their normalcy,” he added. The New York Times reports that the numbers do seem to be behaving as Bratton predicted: “In total, officers made 4,690 arrests in the week ending on Sunday, police statistics showed, according to a precinct commander who saw the numbers. The number is below the 7,508 in the same week in 2014, but above the 2,401 made between Dec. 29 and Jan. 4.” They also issued 5,550 parking summonses last week, which — while still significantly fewer than the 21,000 they wrote during the same period in 2014 — is a whole lot more than the prior week’s 1,191. While it’s good to see that Bratton still has control of his department, don’t expect to see anyone celebrating in the once-again heavily policed streets.
