On Wednesday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi celebrated National Women’s History Month by taking a selfie with the three women in the Supreme Court. Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan both seemed to think this was a great idea, and smiled for the camera. Ruth Bader Ginsburg may have intended to follow suit, but judging from the unvarnished look of comprehension visible in Nancy Pelosi’s tweet of said picture, she ended up accidentally looking straight into the soul of the selfie itself instead.
It is unclear if what she found inside the camera’s depths horrified, intrigued, mystified, unsettled, emboldened, shocked, despaired, disappointed, or bored her, since those all seem like accurate ways to describe her facial expression. It is also a testament to the improvements of mobile technology that the photo managed to withstand that withering gaze. Everyone else in the photo seems oblivious to the chemistry between the 82-year-old and the cultural trend, which silently agreed to part ways as frenemies, as they both seek world domination one Tumblr at a time.
