Lindsey Graham has weighed in on Caitlyn Jenner’s transition and, unlike some Republican presidential candidates, he avoided saying something foolish about transgender people, and even made an effort to use the correct pronouns. “I haven’t walked in her shoes. I don’t have all the answers to the mysteries of life,” the South Carolina senator told CNN’s Dana Bash. “I can only imagine the torment that Bruce Jenner went through. I hope he’s – I hope she has found peace.” He also welcomed Jenner to the GOP, saying, “If Caitlyn Jenner wants to be a Republican, she is welcome in my party.”
On the other hand, Graham felt the need to stipulate, “I’m a pro-life, traditional marriage kind of guy,” and framed American unity in the most frightening way possible. “Here’s what I would say to the talk show hosts: In the eyes of radical Islam, they hate you as much as they hate Caitlyn Jenner,” he said. “They hate us all because we won’t agree to their view of religion. So America, we are all in this together.” Basically, if LGBT Americans aren’t that worried about their own rights, but passionately agree that there’s “too much debt, too many terrorists,” Lindsey Graham’s their candidate.
